Since the issue of our last newsletter back in March much has happened. Fundraising continued apace with the St Bees Beach clean and the Bounceathon each raising over £1000. £2450 was donated by Neighborhood forums following presentations from our students to help towards the cost of their visit to Rungwe as ambassadors for West Cumbria. The group of young people involved this time round raised money like none before them. Over the last two years they have carried on finding endless new and inventive methods of raising money. This all resulted in us being able to spend over £30,000.00 in Tanzania on much needed school improvement projects. The money was used for the direct purchase of building and classroom materials. June also saw the launch of our new website and with the addition of our very own Blog we were able to give folk back home daily updates on what was happening during our visit. As we recruit new young people for the next cycle of the Link we wish everyone in our last group every success as they follow their individual paths.

Last years visit from the Tanzanians was a HUGE success! The group became so close. We took part in many different activities organised by the leaders such as; visits to a farm, visits to COSC disabled centres, drama days and ICT training sessions. We also visited many schools both primary and secondary where we performed many Tanzanian songs and dances. We were also involved in last years Whitehaven carnival. As well as participating in events that were already planned the student group decided to do things that would involve us all without the leaders. Firstly we decided to go bowling. We were able to get a mini bus there and back, that was also the first time the Tanzanians tasted McDonalds. We thought it would be a nice idea to take the students to the cinema. We took them to see Pirates of the Caribbean as it’s a film more about the special effects than the story. They seemed to really enjoy most if not all the activities.
